I’m sure some of you still use RSS to consume your favorite websites so I think you need to be prepared for this one. Reddit will no longer be providing RSS feed access as of November 13th. They are blaming this on AI bots that can scrape these public feeds.

Reddit notified its moderator team that they will no longer be allowing RSS feeds due to large amounts of scraping and automated bots utilizing the open feed. As some of you may know RSS allows you to follow certain subreddits and users on your preferred rss reader without using the actual app. If you are just a user that uses rss to consume subreddits that you don’t moderate, then you won’t be able to do that anymore. Reddit stated that they will not be providing any type of service for normal users that may want to continue using RSS. Only moderators that run a subreddit will be able to get an alternative which would be through discord relay.

As if that wasn’t enough, they are continuing to close off more of the website. Many users prefer to use Old Reddit instead of the newer version. Reddit had already required you to be logged in to use old Reddit but they will now only allow moderators and people that use the older version of the site in the past 6 months. Once again closing off access to those who aren’t moderators.

Reddit will also be phasing out its Public API by the end of October 31st. No new public api calls will be allowed and will begin removing third party apps that aren’t registered by mid January. This will continue until all Public API calls are removed by March of 2027. They are forcing users to use their Developer Platform. Reddit will be giving away $1 million to these apps/bots to help them transition over. $1,000 per app that meets the criteria.

There will also be less automation options for new subreddits. They will not be able to use Automod to remove/filter posts and will have to use newer methods to enforce rules. Of course users and moderators are upset about this change as well. Since they will no longer have the ability to get alerts when someone posts in their community and less ways to auto moderate. With all the bots that are consuming website data its almost funny how companies are cutting off the general public as well.
