Who knew AI would be at it again with e-commerce. It seemed like the AI wars were going to be who can generate the prettiest poems and pictures. Now its your shopping cart and Meta vs. Amazon have come to blows.

A couple weeks ago Meta released their hot new AI agent known as Muse. The hype around it was that it would be your go-to assistant that could help you book plane tickets, look through your calendar and make purchases online. The response to the new release was great it took the #1 position on app stores and helped boost Meta’s stock by over 10%. Well Amazon cut it short when users began having Muse look up prices and make purchases on their site. They received an error message informing them that the AI agent was not authorized on the site and was breaking their Terms and Conditions.

They believe that Meta has allowed the agent to search their website without letting them know. Disguising the agent as a person and allowing the AI to have access to customer information poses security threats to Amazon. If your going to have an agent come into a store and use your credit card and account info. You should let the merchant know and come to an agreement. Meta believes that there is no harm to the users and that all of the user’s information is kept in a virtual machine that the AI cannot view.

This conflict is interesting because Amazon and Meta work together as well. Amazon provides server space for Meta and allows there customers to purchase items on there websites through instagram and Facebook. So Amazon feels as though they need to step in and cut Meta off from using there website. Amazon also recently blocked the AI agent Perplexity and is currently working to prevent shopping agents from OpenAI and Google. While developing their own shopping assistant. All of these stories revolve around one theme who will take control of your wallet when it comes to agentic AI. Will it be the AI agent you are telling to buy the shoes or the company that will ship them to you.

Conclusion

Amazon has good arguments on the cybersecurity and information security side but this battle is over the high ground of digital land space. Once someone creates an AI that will buy things on your behalf there is no profit being made on ad space and instant gratification. If meta decides to build out there agent to do all these tasks they can reduce amazon to just another shipping company. There needs to be more control on how we allow virtual browsing to take place. Once again meta is learning that there needs to be changes on the web to allow these virtual agents. More walls will be put up by corporations to keep universal agents away from their websites until a business deal can be made. Or they develop there own bots to compete with.
